What to Expect

We want the experience of this procedure to be specialized for you. Our goal is to provide you an in-office surgery experience in our Surgical Suite. Depending on the complexity of the proposed procedure, an outpatient type of intervention may be the only resort. If it’s in the office, we will make you comfortable, go over the risks and the benefits and talk about the recovery. We will discuss the ways to achieve pain management/control during the procedure, the procedure itself, and what to expect. You will find yourself well-informed as you look forward to your proposed procedure. This fact is also true if you have outpatient-based surgery. Additionally, our doctor will meet you and your family member(s) at the outpatient facility on the day of surgery to go over all pertinent details again. An anesthesiologist or Anesthetist will also meet with you on the day of surgery to discuss how they plan to make you comfortable during your surgery experience.

The foot procedure itself should be relatively quick, less than an hour for most surgeries, but sometimes more. Some of our reconstructive foot and ankle surgeries can take several hours and may even require an overnight stay for postoperative monitoring or for pain management. However, with most of our outpatient-based surgeries, patients can go home that same day with satisfactory pain control in the foot or ankle. Now, of course, that ‘numbing medicine’ will wear off and you will have some discomfort. Our doctor will prescribe appropriate pain medication to facilitate your pain management. Our doctor will also discuss ways to monitor
for infection and other adverse events. You will be provided with an emergency phone number in the unlikely event you need to contact the doctor.

Again, we want your surgery experience, whether it’s foot surgery or ankle surgery, to be a positive one, where you feel well-informed and comfortable. Our goal is to have you back on your feet doing the things you love. Sometimes surgery is necessary. Hopefully, not too often. Please meet with our doctor. We want to help you have a successful outcome for your foot or ankle problem. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call The Foot and Ankle Clinic of Albuquerque, P.C.
