Foot & Ankle Trauma
The foot and ankle is a complex system with 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 110 ligaments, tendons, and muscles. When functioning well, it can provide a stable construct to support our daily activities. However, when one or more of these bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, or tendons becomes injured, it can be fraught with untoward effects if left untreated.
Sprains, strains, and tears are common occurrences in the foot and ankle. These are usually the result of a misstep, a twisting of the foot/ankle, or trauma.
Fractures or breaks in the bone can also occur through direct or indirect trauma, such as slipping, falling, or having a heavy enough object land on your foot. Overuse injuries can lead to significant pain and early diagnosis and treatment in foot and ankle trauma is essential in achieving the best possible outcome. We will perform a thorough examination and evaluate for the presence of possible fractures, dislocations, sprains, or strains. This can result in the need for X-rays of the foot and/or ankle, and possibly the need for additional diagnostic imaging, such as a ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to confirm a specific diagnosis.
Depending on the diagnosis, conservative and/or surgical treatments will be available. Our doctor is well trained in foot and ankle injuries/trauma, and will provide you the best care possible to facilitate your return to functionality on your feet.
